Are Parts of Your Home Either Too Hot or Too Cold?

An uncomfortable indoor climate and high energy bills are often related. Most BC households spend thousands on energy each year—but you’re not getting the comfort you’re paying for.

Energy Waste

Many older homes were not built to save energy because energy was cheap then, but not today. The problem isn’t just the immediate cost—it’s that you’re paying for comfort you’re not getting.

Common Signs You Are Wasting Energy

Your energy bills are higher than your neighbours’ despite similar home size

Heating costs spike a lot in winter

Your HVAC system runs constantly but does not keep up

You avoid looking at your utility statements

Energy bills seem to keep going up

High energy cost is one problem, but are you getting the home comfort you want?

Why This Happens

Stack Effect

We create heat in our homes with our bodies, electronics, hot water use, and cooking etc. In heating season we create even more heat from energy sources.

Warm air rises in the home pulling cold air in at lower levels to replace it. This is called Stack Effect. Air rises even more faster in multi-storey buildings.

Air Leakage

The exterior surfaces of a house form the house envelope: foundation, walls, windows, doors, attics. Modern houses have air barriers in the envelope to reduce air leaks and stack effect, but may not be well installed. Older houses lack air barriers and leak more.

Overworked HVAC systems often reflect excess air leaks in the house envelope.

Our Solution

ARG Energy uses professional energy evaluation methods to identify exactly where your home is losing heat and why temperatures are unbalanced.

Comprehensive Evaluations

An EnerGuide Evaluation, the national standard, is a starting point to measure home envelope insulation components, mechanical systems, and air leaks. CSA F280-12 heat load calculations provide estimates to size heat pump and furnace upgrades properly.

Problem Identification

Detailed reports estimate  energy savings from each recommended upgrade. Pictures of air leak locations are provided.

Upgrade Planning Solutions

Consider the benefits of home comfort upgrades. Compare energy savings with contractor quotes to make a plan.

Implementation Support

Follow up evaluation to validate upgrades and get an EnerGuide label that increase a home’s value.

Case Study: 2,500 sq ft Home in Sechelt

This 2-storey home had electric bills of almost $1,000/month during peak winter heating and was overheated on hot summer days. The foundation was poorly insulated, cold air moved quickly into the home making uneven climate zones and cold floors.

Our Energy Evaluation Identified High-Value Upgrades

  1. Insulate foundation walls to R20+
  2. Seal identified air leaks
  3. Replace electric furnace with properly sized heat pump
  4. Replace electric hot water tank with hybrid heat pump water heater

The Results

  • Peak winter bills dropped from $1,000/month to $250/month
  • House is comfortable year-round with heating and cooling
  • Provincial energy rebates totaled $7,500
  • Annual savings of thousands of dollars with fast payback
